How do you determine whether you slept well or not? While a lot of people count the hours slept (you should aim for 7-9 hours a night), it is also important to measure your sleep quality.
So what is sleep quality? For most guys, this means that you typically fall asleep within 30 minutes or less. During the night, you ideally wake up at most 1 time and fall back asleep within 20 minutes of awakening.
On the other hand, if you find yourself staring at the ceiling or rolling around in your bed all the time, it means that you probably have less than ideal sleep quality. In that case, here are 7 things you can do to improve your sleep quality:
1. Avoid Caffeine, alcohol and other drinks that keep you awake.
These drinks are all stimulants that will keep you awake. So it’s best for you to avoid them a few hours before you go to sleep.
2. Use your bedroom only for sleep
Humans are creatures of habit. Using your bedroom only to sleep will help condition your brain to want to sleep whenever you enter your bedroom.
3. Have a pre-sleep routine
Humans are creatures of habit, we love our routines because it makes things easier for us. After a while, things just go automatically when you get accustomed to a routine.
The same goes for a pre-sleep routine. If you brush your teeth around 10 pm every night and go to bed afterward. You will find that after a while you will start feeling sleepy when it’s almost 10 pm because of your routine.
Sleep at the same time every night, do the same things around the same time and you will find that it can make a big difference for your sleep.
4. Get up and do something else if you really can’t sleep
If you can’t fall asleep, it doesn’t help to roll around in bed while frustrating yourself. Instead get up and do something relaxing in another room. Some things that you could do is read a book, do some stretches or get a warm glass of milk before returning to bed.
5. Drink less before sleep
If you keep waking up at night because you have to go to the toilet, try to reduce your fluid intake before bed. This will help prevent nighttime toilet visits or at the very least reduce it.
6. Reduce bright lights in the evening
Many of us have bright lights that keep your brain stimulated such as a smartphone screen or the computer. Reducing these and getting a light that you can use to dim your room helps the natural progression of the day as well.
7. Exercise regularly and early
Exercising helps to reduce stress levels while at the same time you will be exhausted at the end of the day. These both help you to fall asleep better at night.
